Should my young athlete play multiple sports in the same season?

Print

Although playing multiple sports has many benefits, there are several reasons that it may not be beneficial for young athletes to play more than one sport in a single season. Try to work with coaches to see the benefits of playing multiple sports in separate seasons.

  • Participating in multiple sports can promote physical activity skills, however, the overall volume of organized sports in one season is a risk factor for injury.

  • Athletes should avoid playing on multiple teams at the same time (including different sports)

  • Athletes should limit participation in organized sports to no more than 5-6 days per week of participation, including practices and competition.

  • The athlete and family should keep track of organized activities, individual coaches may not. Work with coaches to incorporate varied training in a sport’s off-season including strength training, pick-up games and free play.
